Kizer starts and throws a TD on Notre Dame’s 1st possession
Backup quarterback Tyrone Swoopes rammed his way to a 6-yard touchdown run in the second overtime to propel the upstart Longhorns past 10th-ranked Notre Dame 50-47 Sunday night before a stadium-record crowd of 102,315 at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Score is tied in the second quarter at 14 with 3:44 left before the half.

NOTES: Shane Buechele’s father, former major league third baseman Steve Buechele, was given the day off from his day job as bench coach of the Texas Rangers to come and see his son run out on the field as the starting quarterback for the Longhorns.
“I believe in what we’re doing”, Strong said after the game. You know, nobody seems to think that this can happen. “You knew the stage wouldn’t be too big”, Strong said.
The Irish will return home to face Nevada in Notre Dame Stadium on September 10, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC Sports. Special mention to Jarron Jones for blocking the fifth kick of his career that resulted in two points for Notre Dame on a Shaun Crawford return to tie the game at 37-37.
Linebacker Cody Poock was flagged early in the first quarter, while Tai-yon Devers and Jonathan Celestin both got flagged in the second half. “Coach Strong is a great coach, we love playing for him and hopefully we’ll go get more victories for him”.
For so much of the game, it felt like UT’s stunning win against Oklahoma last season in the Cotton Bowl. Back and forth we go. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder finished out with two more touchdown tosses before Tyrone Swoopes ended the matter with a touchdown in double-overtime.
University of Texas head football coach Charlie Strong refused to give the answer at Monday’s press conference, leaving those fans and coaches to wonder which of Texas’ two quarterbacks will start Sunday. Texas, D.Foreman 24-131, Swoopes 13-53, Warren 14-46, Buechele 5-33, (Team) 3-(minus 26).
Notre Dame is still a very talented team and they have one of the top quarterbacks in the country if they stick with Deshone Kizer.
It was 37-35 Texas with three and a half minutes to play. Even though a targeting penalty wasn’t initially called on the field, the replay official could have overruled officials on the field.
Based on how UT performed against Notre Dame on Sunday night, that will clearly not be the case in 2016. UT’s offensive line was pushing Notre Dame in whatever direction it wanted, and ran for 237 yards.
The entire game was a back and forth shootout battle between Buechele and Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer, who threw five touchdown passes. After trading touchdowns in the first OT session, Notre Dame could only muster a field goal for their second possession. “Now you have a system where you can play two and you can rotate those guys”. Notre Dame got within three.
TEXAS: Safety Dylan Haines left the game in the second quarter with a head injury. They were a 5-7 mess, another chapter of a program that has been in turmoil ever since quarterback Colt McCoy’s arm went numb in the BCS National Championship Game seven seasons, one coach, two athletic directors and 35 losses ago.
