Klopp: Europa League loss can be turning point for club
The 35-year-old former Arsenal and Manchester City centre-back has established himself as a first-choice option for Jurgen Klopp since Mamadou Sakho was hit with a doping ban last month but was unable to prevent a 3-1 defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League final.

The Anfield outfit suffered a 3-1 defeat to Sevilla, who claimed the title for a third year in succession, in Basel on Wednesday night.
Klopp accepted he and his players reacted poorly after Sevilla’s fast start to the second half.
He said they had no luck and maybe a sixth to 70 percent effort in the second half which is not enough for a final.
Striker Christian Benteke will talk to manager Juergen Klopp to find out if he has a future at Liverpool after enduring a hard first season with the English Premier League side. “We will use this experience”.
Sevilla’s Spanish midfielder Jose Antonio Reyes holds the trophy after winning the UEFA Europa League final football match between Liverpool FC and Sevilla FC at the St Jakob-Park stadium in Basel, on May 18, 2016.
“So for example we may end up with an attacking midfield player, but if one of the better attacking midfield players comes up we are going to get him”.
But Smith could get a headstart on Gomez if he can shine against England in Sunderland on May 27, while the Penrith-born defender has also been named in the Socceroos’ squad to face Greece on June 4 and 7. “Liverpool were very poor in the second half”.
He told Omnisport: “I don’t think that Liverpool are at a point now where we can afford to turn quality down even if it’s not needed, because I think we need to get quality in”.
Moreno failed to clear an initial cross satisfactorily, with Sevilla’s Mariano gaining possession, nutmegging Liverpool’s left-back on the edge of the box and squaring the ball for Gameiro to tap into the net.
“Sturridge produced an wonderful finish last night but doesn’t look fit to me and seems to have lost some pace”. I spoke to my players already and tomorrow they go all over the world so that’s how it is.
Klopp was less annoyed by the concession of the first goal than he was by the way his side handled being breached.
“It will be a long tournament [Euro 2016] for a lot of my players – the Belgian players, the English players, the German player”. We have to use the time.

“We have to work on it, it’s not a wonder or something, it’s pure work”.
