Klopp has told Sturridge he may have to play through the pain to improve his appearance record after a catalogue of injuries.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes that striker Daniel Sturridge needs to understand the difference between “serious pain and only pain”.

Sturridge has suffered from numerous injuries since joining Liverpool from Chelsea in January 2013, and has missed nearly as many matches as he has played in since that time.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge must overcome the pain barrier to put his injury nightmares behind him, manager Jurgen Klopp says.

Just as the game was chugging along nicely for Liverpool, who dominated the opening stages, goalkeeper Simon Mignolet held onto the ball in the area for around 20 seconds, forcing the referee to award an indirect free kick to Bordeaux in the Liverpool area.

“It wasn’t ideal. We can have a complete new team [and think] ok, s*** we didn’t train together, but with time they can get better and better”.

Klopp added: “Everybody wants him back but we have to learn that was the situation yesterday (Thursday). It is a really long period so now we have to stay patient I am sorry to say – sorry for you, sorry for me, sorry for him”.

But Monk, who guided the club to their best ever Premier League finish of eighth place last season, insists he retains the backing of club chairman Huw Jenkins and has been charged with leading an upturn in fortunes.

Liverpool host Swansea in their next EPL match on Sunday evening, with kick-off at 18:15 South African time. I know a lot about Christian because when he was at Aston Villa we [Borussia Dortmund] were interested in him, everyone was interested. “It’s not a situation I saw but we trained in two groups, the starting line-up and the other players trained together in shooting”, said Klopp.

“We will try everything when we travel to Sion in two weeks, but there are 50 games between then and now”. “We will have to decide”, he said. He can be much more dominant in the game, that’s what we are always talking about. They made a goal, we got a penalty so it was an open game again.
