There’s poor, despondent Christian Bale who drowns his sorrows in meaningless sex, frolics on the beach and gazing pensively at aquariums.
From the expanse of the Badlands, to the naturally lit wheat fields on an industrialized farm, Terrence Malick has made some of the most visually arresting, soul-stirring, and thematically profound films ever made. Like other Malick’s movies, “Knight of Cups” brings in handsome settings, good music and glimpses of beauty, joy and pain.
Knight of Cups opens in theaters March 16th, 2016. Cate Blanchett co-stars as his partner, Nancy, with Natalie Portman as Rick’s new love interest, Elizabeth.
Bale stars as an uninspired screenwriter, Rick, who is addicted to success but simultaneously despairing at the emptiness of his life. In recent years, Malick has shifted his gaze towards the contemporary: Sean Penn’s character in The Tree Of Life was an architect of our new world, wandering aimlessly in our cold spaces, but To The Wonder was set entirely in the present day.

The movie has a star-studded cast which also includes Brian Dennehy, Joel Kinnaman, Wes Bentley, Antonio Banderas, Teresa Palmer and Freida Pinto. Like the tarot card of the title, Rick is easily bored and needs outside stimulation. Once again a voiceover is laid over images which also seek their own authenticity. Which path will Rick choose?
