SCOTLAND’s Russell Knox holed a clutch 12-foot par putt on the 72nd hole to edge out veteran Jerry Kelly by a shot in the final round of the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in CT. A footnote is that some of those guys, including Geiberger, posted their 59 on a par 72 golf course whereas Furyk nailed his 58 yesterday on a par 70 course.

“There’s a lot of rounds by a lot of great players ahead of me that have never reached 58, so to hold that record alone right now, on the PGA Tour at least.is phenomenal”, Furyk told reporters on Sunday. “I know by winning this tournament it’s put (European Ryder Cup captain) Darren Clarke in a very hard position not to pick me”.

“I’m a big beast rolling in that putt”, said Knox, who had said he was a “beast” at TPC River Highlands after his second-round 67 on Friday.

On a day when Jim Furyk carded a record 12-under-par 58, Knox closed with a 68 to finish at 14-under-par 266 at River Highlands in Cromwell.

The 44-year-old found the water and three-putted for a double bogey, before finishing the weekend with a birdie after a brilliant 124-yard approach shot that left Harrington with a three-foot putt. Knox showed all his skill and resolve, however, to salvage his par and seal a huge victory.

“Wow. Congrats to Jim Furyk”.

Knox only needed a 2-under-par 68 to finish at 14-under to nip Kelly, the former University of Hartford standout just a few months shy of joining the Champions Tour. The then 28-year-old from Atlanta had ten birdies and two eagles in his round, which would have been a 57 but for a bogey he recorded on the short eighth hole at Huron Oaks Golf Club.

In a span of seven holes, Henley went from the top of the leaderboard at 14-under to a tie for 11th at -9. There was all sorts of applause from coming from the sports world as golfers, athletes and commentators were all astounded with Furyk’s incredible feat.

“I guess had I never shot 59 before, I probably would have been thinking 59, the barrier”, he said. The American carded a 13-under round of 59 during the second round of the BMW Championship. You could have counted Furyk among them as he stood over his ball on the first tee, wondering not about his scorecard but his flight schedule.

The 31-year-old began the day three shots behind overnight leader Daniel Berger but as the American fell back, Knox kept grinding away, turning in 34 and then opening up a two-shot lead with birdies on the 13th and 14th.

NOTES: Jim Furyk is the first player in PGA Tour history with two rounds below 60.

“I want to point out that this decision on his recognition of the Payne Stewart Award was made prior to him shooting 58”. “I’m still a little stunned and a little flabbergasted, said Furyk who jumped 65 places to tie for 5th”.

Bryan won with a birdie on the par-3 18th, hitting a 6-iron from 194 yards to 3 feet.

Knox put his drive on No. 18 deep in the rough and his second shot in a bunker. He finished his first nine holes in a course-record 27 shots.

Even if Knox is not among the nine players to make the team automatically, he will be in line for one of Clarke’s three captain’s picks.

“What an honor and a privilege to represent the United States, the country that we love very much”, said Watson, who was showered with “USA!” chants from the gallery Sunday.
