Koeman praises Klopp’s attacking football at Liverpool

Newcastle United earned their first win in three games as they beat Liverpool 2-0 in the English Premier League on Sunday. Most of the first-half was an end-to-end affair with both teams attacking with pace – however, neither side managed any shots on target.

Jurgen Klopp, who tasted defeat for just the second time in his fledgling reign, was less than happy with his side’s performance in losing to Newcastle.

“I don’t think so, he touched it but I think it’s my goal”, a smiling Wijnaldum told Sky Sports.

After conceding eight goals in their two previous games, against Leicester and Crystal Palace, these were particularly precious points, secured courtesy of Martin Skrtel’s own goal and a stunning second from Georginio Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum wrapped up the points in stoppage time with a classy finish as Newcastle deservedly eased their relegation fears and delivered a blow to Liverpool’s Champions League aspirations.

“They do care, there is desire there but they’re young players, and they’ve got to learn”, he said.

Meanwhile Klopp claimed Liverpool’s title challenge had only ever been a media construct. They were playing build-up, they didn’t create chances, but we didn’t create chances either. But I thought we deserved to win.

He spent last term on loan at West Brom, so it’s easy to forget that he’s a Liverpool player at all, but the England Under-21 worldwide reckons he can still make it at Anfield.

“If you think about which situation Newcastle are in, and which situation we are in, then you can say they deserved the win”, he added.

“Nearly everything (went wrong), I would say – the start, the middle and the end”, said Klopp.

With Liverpool well on top throughout the opening 20 minutes, the Reds still struggled to create much in front of goal despite their heavy pressing. ‘We played this game today and at this moment I’m trying to understand why.

‘I’ve had a quick catch-up with Klopp to see where I am and how I am progressing.
