Kogi speaker impeached, replaced

The Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Momoh Jimoh-Lawal has been impeached.

“It is important to let the public know that although, Ukwubile Achanu Ochejenunu of Idah Constituency attempted to move an impeachment motion with a self aclaimed 17 other members”.

He said the signatures of lawmakers that reportedly supported his impeachment were forged, saying the police would be invited to investigate the matter.

The embattled speaker, Lawal, however, yesterday insisted that he remain the Speaker of the House. Godwin Osiyi has been named as the new Speaker.

Seventeen members out of 25 voted for the impeachment of the two presiding officers.

He said: “This gentleman that was removed did not come in as speaker”.

The new deputy speaker, who later addressed journalists, said the decision to change the speaker of the Assembly though painful was the right one, to move the state forward. James Eneche from Olamaboro is the new minority leader….

“The ill motivated attempt to hijack the leadership of the Kogi state House of Assembly by some few members can best be described as most unpatriotic and at variance with legislative practices and principles the world over”.

Osiyi apologised for the attack on NTA news crew earlier at the assembly complex by hoodlums.
