Kokomo tornado spawns damage

Three tornadoes touched down Wednesday afternoon in IN, one causing damage in Kokomo, according to the National Weather Service.

Police officers in Indianapolis spotted at least two funnel clouds close to the ground in the city just south of Interstate 70, but the department had received no reports of damage, according to Officer Jim Gillespie of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

But no one was injured at the apartments, he said, adding: “So, I guess we’re all blessed at the Park Place”.

Local emergency dispatchers said only minor injuries had been reported. The Indianapolis Star reports that about 200 people were being housed and fed at the center at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, hours after the storms moved through.

Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight said Thursday that about 220 people stayed overnight in a temporary shelter. Falling tree limbs and air conditioners damaged 20 to 30 cars, he said.

Pressed on whether he would clear his campaign schedule for the rest of the week, Pence said: “We’ll be here as long we need to be to make sure Hoosiers who have been impacted by these storms have what they need and have the support they need”. GOP vice presidential candidate and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence plans to leave the campaign trail Thursday to assess storm damage.

Howard County Commissioner Paul Wyman noted that the county and the city of Kokomo faced tornado damage in November 2013 when the region was hit by a twister that damaged homes and businesses and injured almost three dozen people. Authorities say about a dozen people were injured, but none seriously.

A toppled Starbucks in Kokomo was among the buildings hit Wednesday.

Indiana University Kokomo canceled all events on campus Wednesday evening due to the severe weather. Starbucks released a statement on its website, saying workers and customers at the damaged coffee shop were safe.
