Likening the Indian Railways to an ICU patient, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today said the public transporter was suffering because of neglect and lack of investment and the government would invest $120 billion in the next five years. “Different types of crimes are committed by anti-social elements”, Prabhu said at the Eastern Railway headquarter here. “We can not be ambiguous about our goals”, said Prabhu, stressing on the role of chartered accountants in realising the potential of the Indian economy. The railway minister said, ” This app will act as a deterrent to criminals.

The minister, however, asserted that things were moving in the right direction and called for cooperation from the states in dealing with the problems of railways.

“We are trying to bring down the cost of electricity consumption by R3,000 crore a year”.

However, on the cargo front, the railways has already developed a capability of handling 1.2 billion tonne per annum but there has not been enough cargo generated this year so far for the optimum utilisation of capacity.

Indian Railways will invest Rs.82, 000 crores in building the much awaited Eastern Freight Corridor which will come up in 2019.

“The basic functionality of R-Mitra (Railway Mobile Instant Tracking Response and Assistance) is to alert the nearest RPF inspector and divisional security control room in case of any emergency with the press of a button only”, Eastern Railway general manager R K Gupta said. He said that the app works both online and offline in SMS mode by using the helpline number 56161.

Describing passengers safety as one of the biggest challenges of the railways, Prabhu said technology can help the national carrier in providing better security.
