Konta overwhelms Kvitova to reach Eastbourne quarters

On the day she was confirmed as the 17th seed for Wimbledon, the British number one came from a set down to win 5-7 6-4 6-0.

She said: “It’s definitely one of my biggest wins, even though I don’t think she’s in the top 10 this week”. In the second set Bouchard broke Radwanska in the first game but Radwanska broke back in the next game.

She next faces 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova, a victor over Kateryna Bondarenko 7-6 (7-3) 6-3, and who came from a break down in the opening set.

With Kvitova having struggled with a right thigh injury since her second round match in Birmingham against Jelena Ostapenko, she began to look as though she was struggling to move.

Johanna Konta revelled in claiming a notable scalp in the week before Wimbledon, after thrashing Petra Kvitova in the deciding set of their third-round match at the Aegon International. But I hope that everything will be fine.

Durie, 50, said she has been amazed by Konta’s rise.

Prior to this week Bouchard had managed just seven wins in the eight tournaments she has played since reaching the Kuala Lumpur final in March. She’s a two-time Wimbledon champion, so I think her results speak for themselves. “I played really well”.

“I’m happy just the way I stayed with my game plan the whole way and the way that I was just extremely positive throughout the match”.

She will be late on again on Thursday as she faces the victor of the suspended match between Andrea Petkovic and Ekaterina Makarova. “So it has great memories for me, and I’m excited to go down there and hopefully play some good tennis”.

“I told myself to just really keep going”, Konta said.

Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland advanced when Mirjana Lucic-Baroni retired with illness as Radwanska led 6-4, 2-1, but second seeded Italian Roberta Vinci was also upset 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 by another Russian former champion, Ekaterina Makarova.

Monica Puig will face Kristina Mladenovic in the opening match on Centre Court on Thursday after the Puerto Rican qualifier defeated 2009 Eastbourne champion Caroline Wozniacki in a close fought three-setter on Centre Court.

Former champion Elena Vesnina beat another qualifier Madison Brengle in a tight match, 7-6 (2) 6-4.
