Korea warns US of ‘terrifying price’ over nuke tensions

The Guardian reports that Pyongyang has told its military personnel to be wary of the serpents, as they were allegedly released by the South’s spy agency to cause chaos.

“It’s hard to speak in detail, but as there is already a framework for implementing sanctions internationally, we agreed to make intensive efforts in the next two to three months.to cut off cash flows into North Korea as much as possible so as to limit North Korea’s ability to continue nuclear development”, he said.

Rice also emphasised the importance of all sides implementing United Nations sanctions on North Korea, and was pleased that China said it remained committed to their implementation, said the senior U.S. official who declined to be identified.

Meanwhile, the South Korean government held a ceremony in Seoul to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the armistice, with Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn saying that Seoul will work with the global community in dealing with Pyongyang.

News of the defections came during a period of tension on the Korean peninsula following the North’s fourth nuclear test in January and a long-range rocket launch the next month.

Earlier in the day, Kerry had referred to Iran and encouraged North Korea to follow its example. “It is not aimed at any other party other than North Korea and the threat it poses and this defensive weapons system is neither designed nor capable of threatening China’s security interests”, Reuters quoted a US official as saying.

The leaflets contained threats to South Korea, including inferences to a possible attack using the Musudan intermediate-range ballistic missile.

The North’s new foreign minister and former nuclear negotiator Ri Yong-Ho was making his diplomatic debut at the meeting, hosted by the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

And South Korean groups helping North Korean defectors in China claim that Chinese security forces are arresting and repatriating defectors again.

Washington and Seoul agreed earlier this month to deploy a sophisticated anti-missile system in South Korea, a move which also spooked China and Russian Federation, who worry about having the advanced US-made system on their doorstep.

South Korea’s military discovered dozens of plastic bags, each carrying about 20 leaflets, near the estuary of Seoul’s Han River close to the tense Korean border last Friday, according to the South’s Defense Ministry.

Cho said, however, that he believes China will fully implement sanctions.

Meanwhile, the USA told China on Tuesday that the THAAD system doesn’t threaten China’s security. Security Council resolutions are something that it decided on its own as a permanent Security Council member. When asked why there were no talks between North and South Korea during the forum (which lasted from July 24 to 26), Ri said, “We made proposals to hold talks for working out inter-Korean relations through dialogue and negotiations, but they were all rejected”.
