Kosovo MPs fire tear gas in Parliament

However, the parliament of Republic of Kosovo in capital city Pristina witnessed more din, disruption as the Opposition there used tear gas, pepper spray while protesters outside threw stones, paint at police, parliament building.

The November 17 protest was led by Albin Kurti of the Self-Determination Movement, who used pepper spray on ministers, forcing lawmakers to evacuate the main hall. Outside, police also used tear gas to stop rock-throwing protesters from breaking in.

MPs from the governing coalition later held the session at a different hall in the building.

Tear gas was thrown in the Kosovo Parliament in October 2015 as well.

“These sessions are illegitimate and those decisions can not be considered as legitimate”, said Visar Ymeri of the Self-Determination party, adding that Kurti and another lawmaker were injured by police pepper spray.

Kosovo’s parliamentary opposition is demanding the government scrap a European Union-brokered deal to regulate ties between Serbia and Kosovo, angry in particular at an agreement to grant ethnic Serb areas in Kosovo greater local powers and the possibility of a few financing from Belgrade.

Kosovo’s president has sought a ruling from the court on whether the deal was in line with the constitution.
