Kotla Test: High Court Gives Temporary Relief to Delhi and District Cricket

The fourth Test of the India-South Africa series is likely to be held in Delhi, with the Delhi High Court on Wednesday asking the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to provide the Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) the provisional clearance needed to organise the match at Feroz Shah Kotla.

The Delhi High Court has ordered that the DDCA should host the fourth Test between India and South Africa. Both the Delhi government and the Delhi civic body have slapped numerous notices on the DDCA.

Justice Mukul Mudgal, a former Delhi high court judge, headed the Supreme Court-appointed committee to inquire into the allegations of corruption against Gurunath Meiyappan – former BCCI chief N Srinivasan’s son-in-law, India Cements, and others and allegations of betting and spot-fixing in 2013 IPL matches.

The court adjourned the matter to Thursday morning, when it will hear the counsels from both DDCA and the government before issuing a final order.

It said that remuneration of Justice Mudgal for the assignment will be decided by him only and DDCA will pay the same to him. It remains to be seen if BCCI retains Delhi as the host for the final game of the series.

DDCA has moved the court for the interim relief as the SDMC had on Monday evening rejected their application for a no-objection certificate or POC to hold the match.

While the match is scheduled to be held from December 3 to December 7, DDCA had sought POC from December 1 to 10.

The DDCA came under scrutiny after former cricketer and BJP MP Kirti Azad had raised the issue of financial irregularities within the association. The DDCA has accumulated, despite repeated reminders, entertainment tax dues amounting to Rs 24.46 crore from 2008 onwards.

The committee submitted its report on Tuesday, recommending that the Board of Control for Cricket in India suspend DDCA and that a commission of enquiry probe the alleged irregularities in the body.
