A Taliban member shot her for being resistant. “In whichever way possible, the money that comes to the family and the donations that people are making, we spend it on children and their education”, she says. It is her father’s pronoun that is referred to in the film’s title; Ziauddin raised Malala to have confidence and speak out. Her rapists have yet to be convicted.

Malala Yousafzai was named after a girl who spoke out and was killed for speaking out. Slick contemporary-issue docs like Malala usually have a little off-the-cuff observational filling, and the handheld glimpses of home and school life that make it in here are easily the best bits of the film, whether it’s the young activist arm-wrestling with her brother, or showing her autographed copy of her own memoir, I Am Malala. Her father did something that is rarely done in patriarchal Muslim societies. She suffers a walking disability, but nevertheless, completed her BA in the neighboring town of Kunri. A few 63 million girls between the age of 6 and 15 are not in school. She was on her way to go to her home, but she stopped to help others. She teaches deaf and mute children using clay figurines she made, or using gestures. “You’re not supposed to have favorites, but she’s incredible”. Free, safe and quality education.

Ms. Yousafzai noted how hard it is for her to watch the news about those conflict-torn areas because every time she does, it makes her cry that no one is taking action while children die and girls continue to be sexually abused.

“I wanted my family to be more like their family”, said the 51-year-old filmmaker, who has three children with wife Elisabeth Shue. He refused “to clip her wings” as he said. She has advocated for education since then. “They need to give it full attention and they should think about their own children”.

She did eventually emerge from the coma, though deaf in one ear and in need of months and months of rehabilitation just to master simple bodily functions most people take for granted.

Malala appeared at the show to promote the upcoming documentary, He Named Me Malala, based on her life. The date is now marked internationally as Malala Day. “Why can’t she be a leader?” she said in an interview, noting that she admired former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in 2007. “The doctors told me she will survive, but she may not be the same as she was”.
