Soglin said now he is focused on helping the workers affected by the closure find new jobs in the community.

The Walton plant, which produces sour cream and cottage cheese, has been a long-time major employer, according to Walton Mayor Ed Snow. “Thank God it didn’t happen”. After being acquired by 3G and Berkshire in 2013, Heinz announced plans to phase out a number of plants, including a ketchup factory in Leamington that had been in operation for more than a century. “We’re trying to rebuild the town and get things going and something like this is kind of a setback”, Planner said. Chuck Schumer announced a deal Wednesday to retain three of the company’s plants in upstate New York. “I will be working with city officials, other legislators and stakeholders to assist those who will be impacted”, Rep. Lisa Subeck, D-Madison, said in a statement. The ripple effect throughout the state was extensive.

“They saved the day”, Nealis said.

“It is very significant”, Soglin said.

“It’s unfortunate that people are losing their jobs, that always hurts”. The company is trying to slash $1.5 billion in costs by 2017.

Kraft Heinz will be closing Madison’s Oscar Mayer plant within two years, the company announced Wednesday, along with six other manufacturing facilities across the United States and Canada.

This afternoon’s report will be the second the company releases after the merger between Kraft Foods Group and H.J. Shutdown of the plants in California, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Canada will lead to 2,600 job cuts.

Kraft Heinz, the third-largest food and beverage maker in North America, is struggling to improve its profitability by lowering costs amidst sluggish sales as more and more consumers now prefer, health, fresh and organic foods to packaged foods.

Kraft Heinz also plans to move about 250 corporate jobs from Madison to Chicago, the company’s co-headquarters along with Pittsburgh.

He further stated that these moves will make Kraft Heinz much more competitive and will speed up its future growth.

Calling the move “difficult but necessary”, Mullen said the closures would cut approximately 2,600 positions from the company’s North American factory-based employee population. “Kraft Heinz fully appreciates and regrets the impact our decision will have on employees, their families and the communities in which these facilities are located”.
