St. Louis Cardinals closing pitcher Trevor Rosenthal (44), celebrates with catcher Tony Cruz (48), after defeating the Chicago Cubs 4-3 in a baseball game Sunday, September 20, 2015 in Chicago.

Pinch-runner Quintin Berry raced home on Anthony Rizzo’s sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th inning, and the Chicago Cubs slipped by the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Heyward’s momentum was going forward, he was in ideal position to throw, and he made a flawless throw.

The right-hander got hurt running to first base after bunting Friday in an interleague game against the Mets at Citi Field.

“Best I’ve ever seen him throw”, manager Mike Matheny told MLB’s official website. “We’re anxious to hear what the doctors have to say”. “I just couldn’t grip it”.

I had one quibble with what Joe Maddon did, or more correctly, did not do in the ninth inning. “It’s obvious that we are playing on the same level as (the Cardinals) are right now”, Maddon said.

Which means the Cubs and Pirates are still on a collision course to square off in the wild-card game… but will that winner-take-all contest take place in Pittsburgh or on Chicago’s North side?

“We’re up. Gotta look at the positives”, Jon Lester said.

Lester has been terrific in his last two starts, allowing two runs over 16 innings in key matchups against division rivals. “We would have liked to win all six, but that’s a good team and they don’t give away outs”. Kris Bryant, batting with two runners on base, struck out to end the inning. He ended up walking Coghlan to bring up Rizzo. Peralta is coming off of a 5-4 loss to St Louis with all five runs plated on six hits in four frames. Baltimore fell 5 1-2 games behind Houston for the second AL wild card. St. Louis won the season series 11-8.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Stephen Strasburg struck out 10 in an encore to one of the best starts of his career, and Yunel Escobar had four hits and four RBIs as Washington beat Miami.

Two walks loaded the bases in that inning and Rizzo singled in a pair of runs. Bryce Harper had three hits, including a double, and scored three times.

In Milwaukee, Todd Frazier homered to become just the second Reds player with at least 40 doubles and 35 home runs in a season.

After the Blue Jays took a 4-2 lead in the eighth, Bradley tied the score with a two-run homer in the ninth against Roberto Osuna.

Matt Adams replaced Molina as a pinch hitter when his spot in the lineup came up in the next inning.

Teheran’s bid was spoiled by Freddy Galvis’ leadoff single in the seventh.

The right-handed Tomlin (6-2) matched his season-high with eight strikeouts before Cody Allen pitched the ninth inning to pick up his 31st save.

Springer’s 14th home run of the season also scored catcher Max Stassi for the Astros (79-71). On a 1-0 count, Pham sends the two-seamer out over the left wall for a solo home run putting the Cardinals on the board, 1-0. He also hit one on August 6.
