Kristina Vogel: ‘Team GB’s Olympic cycling success is very questionable’

Trott told the Daily Mail that she and Jason celebrated their Rio wins with a low-key night.

And it brought with it gushing praise from the man he may yet surpass four years from now in Tokyo.

“He has been untouchable this week, he has been on a different level”. “He has dealt with extreme pressure – he is a true champion”.

It was Kenny’s third gold of Rio 2016, after winning the team sprint on Thursday and individual sprint on Sunday, and Trott’s second after defending the team pursuit crown on Saturday.

Adding to the British trophy cabinet on Tuesday was 16-year-old gymnast Amy Tinkler – Team GB’s youngest athlete – who won bronze in the women’s floor exercise final. “You can do all the reps in the gym but it is character and it is just fantastic to see the smile on his face. This is a really special moment – a phenomenal performance tonight and all week”.

Laura Trott and Jason Kenny will be remembered as the “golden couple” of the Rio Games.

Concerning her future, Hammer said she planned to continue racing but didn’t sound optimistic about making another Olympic appearance.

The pair have been a couple since before the London 2012 games, when their relationship became public knowledge as a result of their being caught on camera together.

He said: “I love being at the Olympics, but when you’re finished all of a sudden the (athletes”) village seems quite confined.

Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish, both of whom bowed out with medals here, and Victoria Pendleton have been compelling, complex characters as well as huge talents.

Things will be getting even better for the star couple later this year, although Kenny is not sure whether he will carry on to another Olympics or not.

“The amount of times that Laura kicked up a fuss on hills because dad and I were dropping her [and said] “if you don’t slow down I’m going to ring mum, she can come and pick me up”.

Kenny and Trott both wanted to enjoy their Rio successes and take some time off, rather than look towards 2020 too soon, knowing there is a lot of hard work and ups and downs to come in the next four years.

So eager was Kenny to get to the front again that he and Malaysia’s Awang Azizulhasni nearly overtook the Derny bike before it had left the track, which is not permitted.

He and Awang were at risk of being disqualified for an early start, but the race was started again, only to be called off a second time after a few rounds because of another premature sprint by other riders.

His video evidence also spared Eilers on the second false start.

Asked how Laura and Jason will deal with being in the media spotlight following their success, Emma said: “Yes they’ll be noticed, but will they be noticed anymore than after London?” I couldn’t have done it without them, especially my coach Paul Manning who puts up with my crap on a daily basis.

“I’m also obviously really proud of Laura”. It’s great to have the town but be so close to the countryside.

“It’s possible to win more”, he said.
