Kubiak hopes Vernon Davis will be ‘big part’ of offense Sunday

Anderson and Ronnie Hillman combined. And rookie Phillip Dorsett remains out with a broken ankle. T.Y. Hilton isn’t certain to be on the field on Sunday after missing his second straight practice due to a foot injury.

Yes, Denver’s defense is all that. The Colts will return 13 of the same starters and the Broncos will have 14. “I’ve been dreaming about Peyton since I left college”, Davis said after concluding his first practice.

Colts fans were wishing that they were saying the same thing.

You get the point.

Denver is off to an undefeated start to its 2015 campaign with a 7-0 record.

While Davis may only be used as a decoy, his ability to make plays throughout his career is something Indianapolis will have to honor and defend. General manager Ryan Grigson has taken heat, too, for his hand in this season’s woes, including Indy’s underperforming offensive line.

At first glance, it looks like a mismatch. But the Colts do have one advantage: the element of surprise.

That loss cost John Fox his job as general manager John Elway went looking for a coaching staff that would be more aggressive, one that would hopefully not allow a team to come onto their home field and embarrass them.

“We’ve got a lot on our plate each week trying to kind of figure out what we’re doing and trying to get everybody on the same page, and that’s plenty to focus on”, Manning said this week.

It’s a stark contrast to the last meeting between Manning’s current team and his old one. “I said, ‘Don’t forget”. Two, they knocked us out of the playoffs; and three, it is an AFC game. “That’s our goal every week – no points”. On Sunday, he’ll actually have a chance to do it – twice. Denver’s defence has been smothering this season, and are good enough to win a championship even with a struggling Peyton Manning. Manning threw for a season-high 340 yards, moving within 283 of Favre’s record 71,838 and tying Favre’s 186-win total in the regular season. And it could all happen in the stadium Manning built.

The Colts’ defense has always been the weak-link of this team even going back to the days when Manning ran the show. “I’m thinking about the Broncos hosting the Colts at something like 8 point favorites and losing in the playoffs”.

At the start of the season, the Week-9 matchup between the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts looked like it would be a contest between two of the NFL’s best teams. Either way, SF has basically thrown in the towel, having sent Vernon Davis to the Broncos before the trade deadline.

In the end, Denver’s defense makes the difference. He is expected to get 12 to 20 plays Sunday against the Colts.

Davis was in the final year of his contract, so offloading him for something now rather than waiting for him to leave in free agency for nothing was a smart move.
