The Anadolu Agency said Sunday the target of the rebels linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, was a police checkpoint at the Diyarbakir Airport. The attack happened not long before midnight local time (5am Singapore) on Saturday.

Turkish broadcaster NTV said that the rockets landed on wasteland nearby.

There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack, but Kurdish militants are its main suspects. The Syrian Kurdish YPG militia has been striking back.

Diyarbakir airport largely handles domestic flights and is served by carriers including Turkish Airlines.

AA said the attack was carried out by the PKK which has fought the Turkish government for over three decades and considered as a terrorist organization by Turkey, EU, NATO and the US.

The southeast of Turkey has been wreaked by violence since the summer of 2015 when a two-and-a-half-year PKK ceasefire collapsed.
