Kyle Busch wins Brickyard 400 for second Indy win of weekend

He led the final 109 laps and 149 of the 170 overall.

Driving a Toyota in a livery nearly identical to the one he won the 2015 Brickyard in, Busch won by 2.1 seconds over runner-up Matt Kenseth as he had to persevere through three late-race restarts after showing dominant form through the course of the majority of the race.

Domination. That is the only word that can describe both Kyle Busch’s wins and poles this past weekend at the Brickyard. He has no experience in an open-wheel auto. “I’m not sure [when]”.

Two of the most important figures in NASCAR history spent what was most likely their final moments at automobile racing’s most important track on Sunday and they did it together.

Johnson’s efforts for a fifth Brickyard win were hindered when he received a penalty for speeding on pit road on the 86th lap.

“I just can’t say enough about the whole group of guys and people that are around us, around me and Adam and Joe with our opportunities that we’ve got with having fast race cars and Toyota’s support, M&M’s support, NOS Energy Drink’s support and it’s just been fun”. There were only four lead changes. So there will be no cooling off Joe Gibbs Racing down the stretch.

“Our guys are getting after it”.

Whatever the problem is, NASCAR needs to fix it or the Brickyard 400 will soon become a race in the past.

Busch only surrendered the lead once – when he pitted after 27 laps – and retook the lead when Brendan Gaughan made his pit stop. And who knows how many Xfinity Series events Busch will have won by then should he keep choosing to pad his portfolio in preliminary events, a process known as the Kyle Busch School of Charm.

The race itself wasn’t what either driver hoped.

His crew chief, Adam Stevens, the one man who knows Busch’s racing style best tried to put his supremacy into perspective.

Busch actually proposed four heat races.
