Kyrgios fined, apologizes for comment to Wawrinka

On Wednesday night, a courtside microphone picked up Kyrgios saying that fellow Australian player Thanasi Kokkinakis had slept with a player who is reportedly Wawrinkas girlfriend.

After losing the first set, Kyrgios muttered: “Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend”.

Nick Kyrgios was booed as he made his way onto court in Montreal this morning, as video emerged of a second sexual sledge he directed at Stanislas Wawrinka during their tense clash.

The ATP said on Thursday that an action was taken against 20-year-old Kyrgios for passing such comments while the match was on. The ATP can fine players up to $10,000 for verbal abuse or unsportsmanlike conduct.

In a post-match interview, Kyrgios had said that Wawrinka had pushed him to say it. Obviously I apologised in public (on Twitter and Facebook) and privately as well.

Kyrgios apologized after he was fined, stating that he takes “full responsibility” for his actions and regrets his comments.

Mandy Charnock wrote: Sorry every time you do something wrong is not acceptable anymore, your attitude is not improving, time to retire, you are not the type of athlete our young people need.

If the ATP rules it as a Major Offense of Aggravated Behavior, Kyrgios could face a $25,000 fine and a minimum 21-day suspension.

Kyrgios said after he had won the match 6-7(8) 6-3 4-0, following Wawrinka’s retirement due to a back injury, that he had been responding to words from the two-time grand slam champion.

Multiple reports also indicate Wawrinka’s girlfriend to be Donna Vekic, a 19-year-old Croatian player.

Wawrinka expressed his outrage on Twitter shortly after the match and called for his opponent to be punished.

Wawrinka’s coach, Magnus Norman, also criticized Kyrgios, who has been at the center of controversy in recent weeks. Despite no one getting hurt at that moment, if someone was hurt however, Kyrgios would have been forced to default the match and something like that could have warranted a significant punishment since it involved the fans of the game. He put his hands on nick – grabbed him and said a whole bunch of abusive s… “I don’t really know”.

“Appropriately the ATP, as the governing body in this case, has issued the maximum fine and continues to review and work through this situation with Nick and his management”.
