Kyrgios, Tomic wins give Australia 2-0 lead over Slovakia

Never a boring moment, Kyrgios also had to overcome a nose bleed during the third set of his win over Martin and couldn’t help but take a pot shot at world No.1 Novak Djokovic after refusing to let the distraction stop him.

Australia have booked their passage back into the Davis Cup world group after continuing their unbeaten run against Slovakia in Sydney on Saturday.

Blunting the booming serve of Sam Groth is the first goal for Slovakia as they try to prevent Australia from sealing a Davis Cup World Group playoff win.

Australia will stay in the premier World Group next year if they win one further match in the best-of-five rubber at Sydney’s Olympic Tennis Centre.

Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic have given Australia a ideal start to its Davis Cup tie against Slovakia, winning the opening two singles matches.

“A ideal start. We know it’s not over quite yet, but the boys did really well today”, Australia captain Lleyton Hewitt told reporters.

Kyrgios made light work of world No.127 Andrej Martin to cruise to a 6-3 6-2 6-4 in Friday’s opening singles rubber at Ken Rosewall Arena.

Kyrgios opened with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win over Martin and Tomic beat Jozef Kovalik 7-6 (5) 6-4, 6-4.

“They were big favorites coming into both singles, but you can’t take anything for granted in Davis Cup”, he said.

Veteran Jose Statham, playing a record 25th Davis Cup tie, downed Muhammad Abid 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 to give the hosts a ideal start. “There’s a lot more pressure on as well and sometimes it’s tougher when you are a lot more fancied chance to go out there and get the job done”.

Kyrgios was then overlooked for Australia’s semi-final loss to Great Britain a year ago following his infamous sledging of Stan Wawrinka, before missing the first-round defeat to the U.S. at Kooyong in March with a virus.

“I’m not trying to do a Novak at the US Open”, Kyrgios said.

“I love it with my heart and soul and I’ve always played well in the event and any tie that comes in the future, I’m always there 100 per cent for Davis Cup”.

Slovakia are without their top two ranked singles players for the grasscourt tie, world No.31 Martin Klizan and world No.102 Lukas Lacko, due to injury.
