L.A. Rams flop in Monday Night debut against 49ers

I wasn’t trusting myself and my abilities.

And it actually didn’t bother me too much Chris Berman called the game for ESPN.

Instead, Los Angeles failed to provide fans with any sort of hope after falling to San Francisco 28-0 during Monday Night Football.

On an utterly embarrassing night for the Rams, Keenum’s performance stood at the top of the list of issues that need to get fixed. The Rams coach, coming off of four losing seasons in as many at the helm of the team, was reduced to telling his players, “I’m not [expletive] going 7-9”, on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” this summer, then watched his squad give up a 101-yard touchdown on the first preseason play in its return to Los Angeles. Oh, the Rams mortgaged the future to get a quarterback that would upgrade the offense, but couldn’t get him prepared for Week 1. The Rams went 3 for 15 on third downs, with Keenum repeatedly throwing to receivers who weren’t far enough downfield to move the sticks. With Jared Goff inactive and Case Keenum named the starter, Coach Jeff Fisher meant to slowly introduce Goff to the speed of a prime time game and observe the offense from the sidelines. He missed on some throws, most notably on his fourth-quarter interception, a pass that should have been thrown to the inside of tight end Lance Kendricks but was instead to the outside. We played good team defense.

Keenum believes the solution to the Rams’ problems centres on confidence – specifically his own.

“When we got things rolling, we were executing at a high level”, he said. That’s a word I’m going to use this whole week – trust. “The same thing with a coach, I mean, if you’re not gonna perform and you can’t have a winning football team, you’re just not gonna be there, especially in L.A”.

“We have to stretch the field”, said receiver Tavon Austin, who had 13 yards on four catches. Even Britt realizes the Rams can’t rely on the passing game to win.

“There’s a lot of things we need to do better and that we need to build on”, Kelly assured. “That will loosen it up on the outside, and we can take a couple of shots downfield and take that eighth man out of the box”.

The Rams put their trust in Case Keenum, making him the starting quarterback despite the selection of Jared Goff with the No. 1 pick in the draft.

Goff was inactive for the opener, and Fisher has said that he would not decide whether to make him the backup until later in the week.

During his Tuesday news conference, Fisher said the Rams didn’t suffer any injuries against the 49ers. The Rams continually failed to create running room for Todd Gurley, and that problem is only likely to get worse against Seattle’s vaunted defence, which limited Miami to 10 points in its defence-dominated opener.

Even the Rams’ vaunted defensive front struggled at times with Carlos Hyde running for 88 yards and the Niners gaining 150 yards in all on the ground with three scores.
