A man in a “Zorro” costume was detained by airport police, LAX Airport said on Twitter.
Neiman added that there were no shots fired and no injuries. The Twitter user, a writer and photographer by the name of Sam Macon, wrote, “Before things got really insane – a man in a Zorro costume with a plastic sword was arrested”.
Police said the reports of a gunman were spurred by “loud noises”, but airport officials said it was unclear whether the person wearing the Zorro costume had any connection to the incident.
An active-shooter alarm is causing a travel nightmare at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday evening.
The ground stop lasted only 20 minutes and was lifted 1.00 a.m., CNN noted. The police had also closed the departure and arrival levels of the central terminal area.
Security officials have been on heightened alert in recent months following deadly attacks at global airports in Belgium and Turkey.
However, early reports from The Associated Press state that police were unable to find a shooter and attributed the report of shots that led to a mass exodus from the airport to “loud noises”.
After an active shooting incident that happened two years ago at LAX, a system was put in place to send text messages to people, he said.
Amid rumours of a possible shooting, social media posts and TV news show many people fleeing from the Airport.
