Labour candidate vows second vote on Brexit

However, having two candidates stand will weaken efforts to defeat the current Labour leader as the anti-Corbyn vote will likely be split between the pair.

The challengers to Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, Angela Eagle and Owen Smith, will face a parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) hustings event on Monday evening, where they will set out their stall to fellow MPs.

Jeremy Corbyn has told his supporters not to abuse MPs challenging him for the leadership of the Labour Party.

He said: “If he stands down and makes this leadership contest a proper contest between credible candidates capable of becoming prime minister, I will engage”.

The contest was prompted after Mr Corbyn lost a vote of no confidence.

“I would have thought it would be better to accept we have this very large membership – they joined because they want to be involved”.

The original Marshall Plan was an aid package from the United States to rebuild western European economies following the Second World War.

He said: “Angela aced it. She came up with this brilliant line”. It seems to me that a £25 bar is quite high and not really reasonable.

He added that he “almost felt sorry for” Mr Corbyn because he had been “listened to in utter silence”.

He said: “That (nominations) is one way in which we can do it, or we can make an agreement between ourselves”. “I think that it’s important therefore that that is recognised and that he be the sole candidate against Jeremy”.

Owen Smith has cancelled the planned launch of his Labour leadership campaign in the wake of the Nice terror attack.

“We, therefore, send a message of support to Jeremy Corbyn at this hard time and in any leadership election”. I think it is unlikely. “And it’s terrible that we’ve got to do that, but I’m afraid it’s true”.

For me, he does not have the passion and strength needed to win back disillusioned Labour voters. We haven’t heard the end of this.

He told an audience at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland today it would not be appropriate to have an all-male battle for the top job as he dismissed claims the party was in chaos.

But Labour’s National Executive Committee has said Mr Corbyn can remain on the ballot paper without securing any fresh nominations.

He went on: “I think there are many people out there who voted in good faith for Brexit and who felt they were doing the right thing for their families and their communities and I respect them for taking that decision”, he said.

It’s not enough just to be anti-austerity, you have to be pro something.

If we don’t pull together, unite and start acting like a proper team we are at risk of falling apart. The deadline is 5pm on Wednesday (20 July).
