Labour leadership rivals Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith heckled during TV debate

He said: “I think after the election is over and after the conference is over you will see the wish of MPs to reflect the wishes of party members all over the country that there is a coming together in order to oppose this Tory government”.

When contacted over Smith’s expulsion, a spokesperson for the Scottish Labour Party said: “We don’t comment on individual member statuses”.

Jeremy Corbyn will pledge to create an energy policy “for the 60 million, not the Big Six” if he becomes prime minister, including the creation of 300,000 jobs in the renewables sector.

“And if Britain had voted to remain, he was pressing the case for reform of these things”.

After announcing he was not going to sing he said bands teach us to work together – until they fall out.

Reiterating his plan to build 1.5 million new homes in five years, half of which would be social homes, and launch a £50 million outreach fund to end rough sleeping, Mr Smith said: “If Jeremy continues as leader, I really fear that the Tories will be in power until at least 2025”.

“There is also some new analysis in there about membership boosting labour productivity and in turn real wages between 1986 and 2011”. Smith said it was understandable that the Jewish community did not feel represented by the party, as it had not done enough to root out antisemitism.

His dossier states: “Jeremy Corbyn says he won’t tolerate abuse but he has repeatedly downplayed or denied abuse was happening, told people to ignore it, criticised actions to tackle it and his campaign and those in his inner circle have actively taken part in it”. That’s not the leadership the Labour party needs – it’s not leadership at all. “There is absolutely no doubt”.

Mr Corbyn’s team described it as a “dodgy” collection of rehashed claims that shows Mr Smith’s desperation.

Near the conclusion of the debate, a questioner asked about whether the candidates support the monarchy.

The debate comes amid a row about Labour members being barred from voting in the leadership election. “I hope our party clarifies its position in support of United Kingdom membership of the single market and continued close engagement with the European Union”.

But May said of modern Labour: “The train has left the station, the seats are all empty, the leader is on the floor – even on rolling stock they’re a laughing stock”.

In addition, 990 people have been excluded because they admitted being a member of another party and another 434 because they have previously nominated a rival political candidate.

A party spokeswoman said Labour had “a robust validation process for all votes in this year’s leadership contest to ensure every vote cast is eligible according to the party’s rules and agreed procedures”.
