Labour ‘likely to split’ if Corbyn wins ballot, rival warns

The former shadow work and pensions secretary said the Tories were “riding roughshod over us” and Labour would be in line for a heavy defeat at the next general election with Mr Corbyn as leader.

Mr Corbyn said: “I’m sure no Labour MP would even dream of walking away from the family of the Labour movement – the family of the Labour Party that helped to put them in Parliament”.

“I like Owen. I always thought he would be a future leader of the Labour Party”.

The pollster asked nearly 5,000 Britons which way they would vote in the case of Labour split, with either the party’s right or left wing breaking away.

But Smith, 46, has strong support among Labour MPs, who argue that Corbyn – a veteran anti-war and anti-nuclear campaigner who has never held high office – can not beat Prime Minister Theresa May’s governing centre-right Conservatives at the next election.

He said: “Jeremy Corbyn’s call for rent controls would be a disaster for tenants”.

Jeremy Corbyn’s office has been contacted for comment.

There are some in the current Labour movement who want us to believe that there is another Labour Party out there.

“I think as an opposition we’ve done very well”.

The latest opinion polls make uncomfortable reading, with one by ICM putting the Conservatives 16 points ahead, while a YouGov survey found 29 per cent of Labour voters would prefer Mrs May to Mr Corbyn as prime minister. The party could be split.

“I wish it had been by more but we were ahead of them at the end of it and the party is growing massively in membership – that must show something”.

He added: “TUSC are fully supportive of Mr Corbyn for the leadership of the Labour Party”.

The turnout was bigger than last year’s, when 166 attended and a majority also backed Mr Corbyn.

That our county doesn’t have any Labour representation in the House of Commons is serious, both for the Labour Party and for the people of Essex in ensuring that our views are heard in holding the Government to account.

He praised Mr Corbyn’s rival for being “radical and pragmatic” and urged other union leaders to back the challenger.

We agree that we need a united Labour Party, we absolutely need that, because disunited parties lose elections.

She said: “The whole point of expediting the case is so that if we do win, the excluded members can be on the voting lists before they are finalised on August 8”.

Mr Smith took nine votes in the election held on June 16.

“So why did you resign?” “I don’t think our leadership has been strong enough about stamping it out”, Smith said.

Under revised rules for the contest between Corbyn and Owen Smith, introduced by Labour’s national executive committee last month, full members can not vote unless they joined in January or before.
