Corbyn insisted he could bring Labour back together after the revolt against him at Westminster and lead it into government, claiming “this party is going places” and was “capable of winning a general election”.

The hard-left leader is alleged to have considered calling the father of Conor McGinn in fury at comments the St Helens North MP made about Mr Corbyn in a magazine article.

The Conservative government is planning constituency boundary changes and Mr Corbyn said that the changes could come into effect before the next general election, which is due in 2020.

Mr McGinn said he had chose to go public after watching an interview with Mr Corbyn in which he repeated his mantra of supporting a “kinder, gentler politics”.

‘I don’t do any abuse, I don’t do any bullying, I don’t allow it to be done in any of my campaigning teams’.

Mr McGinn also said he had been subjected to “a torrent of abuse and threats” by supporters of Mr Corbyn in the past fortnight.

A confident Jeremy Corbyn launched his leadership re-election bid on Thursday, reminding fellow Labour MPs they have “the job, the duty, the responsibility” to stand by the party in the fight against the Tories.

It was up to local constituencies to decide whether they then wanted an open selection process.

Theresa May took part in her first session of PMQs as prime minister on Wednesday and did not wait around to go on the attack against under-pressure Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Mr Smith, Labour’s former work and pensions spokesman, accepted Mr Corbyn had spoken out against the death threats and online abuse sweeping the party.

“We need to change that, we can not continue – it doesn’t matter who wins this leadership campaign, those wounds will still be there and they need to be mended”, she told BBC Radio 4’s World at One.

Some 180,000 Labour supporters have signed up to vote in recent days.

He nevertheless remains popular with numerous rank-and-file party members who ultimately elect the leader and is the favorite with bookmakers to win the leadership contest, the result of which will be announced on September 24.

Meanwhile he blamed Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn for the party’s fall in support at the assembly election.

“I think it is very unfortunate and another example of why really we need a new leadership rather than Jeremy Corbyn”.

Owen Smith, one of the so-called “unity” contenders trying to depose Corbyn, has declared that he wants to “re-write” Clause Four of the Labour Party Constitution.

“I think you have to respect the result of the referendum whether you welcome it or not”, Corbyn told BBC Newsnight.

“I regret the language that has been used by all of them”.

The boundary review will cut the number of MPs to 600 from 650. “It could be the most important political decision you ever make”, Miliband said.
