Lacing up in the fight against Breast Cancer
According to The Cancer Society, “When breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localised stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 100%”. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends 40 as the age for women to start getting mammograms.

The average age of women diagnosed with cancer also has remained about 63, another sign that cancers are not being found sooner.
THE Byron Breast Cancer Support Group (BBCSG) had the lighthouse turn into a fluorescent pink beacon of love and hope last Friday and Saturday evenings.
“While were doing the walk-in mammograms we had one woman who actually, spur-of-the-moment said ‘oh, I’m here, I’ll do it, ‘ and was diagnosed with stage-2 breast cancer”.
“My family was more anxious than I was, so I didn’t want to scare them”, she said. “She planned my meals with other friends and just kept me smiling and laughing, making me believe that everything was going to be okay”. “It’s very upsetting to hear that they may have to wait 20 or 30 years before they’re even checked”.
Kelley Matkins with our local Susan G Komen office also disagrees with the American Cancer Society’s new guidelines.
“The sooner they detect the breast cancer the more likely of a cure and the more likely it will not repeat”, Fletcher said. Make sure that you get the information and the screenings that you need to maximize an early breast cancer diagnosis.
– Physical breast exams by doctors: No recommendation for or against, citing lack of evidence on benefits or harms.
“I don’t think anything softens it up, I know the exact moment when I discovered a lump”, she said. The short answer is yes, especially if you are a woman. Women should be able to start the screening as early as age 40, if they want to. Harris says, she hopes health care providers… “And with technology, more people are surviving than ever before!” The guidelines cited false positives as a source of pain and anxiety for women.

“This meta-analysis showed a protective effect of ever breastfeeding against hormone receptor-negative breast cancers, which are more common in younger women and generally have a poorer prognosis than other subtypes of breast cancer”, the study said.
