Lackey, Pham lead Cardinals to another comeback win over the Reds
The St. Louis Cardinals play the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium tonight. The uprising began with Pham’s triple off reliever J.J. Hoover (8-2). Wong took third on a fly ball, putting the tying run on third with one out. Major League Baseball suspended Cardinals C Cody Stanley for 80 games after testing positive for a banned substance.

In his previous start against the team with baseball’s best record, he pitched five scoreless innings, giving him 11 straight against the Cardinals. Sampson followed that with a victory over the Dodgers, but hasn’t won a game since. He went 0 for 2, extending his slump to 0 for 19.
But Tuesday, the Cardinals didn’t have much luck against the 24-year-old.
Bruce’s 456-foot homer off a 93 miles per hour fastball from Lackey was the longest by a left-handed hitter at 10-year-old Busch Stadium. Bruce has 25 homers, including five in his past eight games. Cardinals fans are ready to bring out their brooms over the Reds.
And it looked as if they might get rid of him quickly in the first inning.
“Even if you have (Matt) Holliday in right there, he could really kill one or it could be, the way he’s running, a pretty simple double play you could be looking at”. Finnegan allowed three hits and one run in five innings and picked up a win at Milwaukee last week.
Plus, Pham was armed with the confidence that the last time he had faced LeCure nine days before in Cincinnati, he had homered to start his recent run. “I’m still working like everyone here to ideal the craft”, he said. “It was more in the zone, a nicer mix”. Cards manager Mike Matheny said it’s sometimes tough to get Lackey off the mound.
The Reds had only eight hits, all singles, three by Phillips and two by Frazier. Instead, he got the out at first, and the runners moved up. Now he just focuses on his approach and staying within what he knows he can do. That got Sampson off the hook for the decision.

Our Birdos were able to break the tie in the 7th, with Tony Cruz (!) getting on with a single, then going all the way to third on a MCarp single of his own. “Their staff was very good at not adding to either of those innings with a base on balls or some hitter’s counts”. “He was sharper and didn’t give us a lot to work with”.
