When Donald Trump insulted his presidential campaign rival Carly Fiorina by suggesting that she had an ugly face, more than a few eyebrows were raised around the country.

The ad, paid for by the Carly for America Committee, features a series of faces of women and girls. “And look at all your faces – the face of leadership”. She had shone during the last debate, even though she had been consigned to the undercard session along with all of the other poor poll performers. I mean, she’s a woman, and I’m not s’posedta say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Fiorina has wisely avoided pound-the-table outrage over the controversy, opting instead to own the attack (“I’m proud of every wrinkle”) and poke some fun: She’s sharpened her tone a bit in the lead up to Wednesday’s CNN/Salem Radio GOP debate, which she’s fought her way into.
But while plenty applauded Fiorina’s backhand swipe at Trump, others said enough already on the “face” comment. But she admits: “To be honest, I got the chills because I am a machine that has been designed to like meaningless schmaltz”. Trump was watching a TV newscast when Fiorina came on screen, according to an account in the current issue of Rolling Stone, and he immediately began to mock her. “Look at that face!” Trump said of Fiorina.
“Look at that face; would anyone vote for that?” In the wake of the first debate she popped up to a range of 5 to 8 percent in national polls. “Ladies, note to Democrat party, we are not a special interest group; we are the majority of the nation”. Typically, the Donald doesn’t worry too much about insulting his fellow potential nominees, because the ensuing struggle usually favors him, as it did over the weekend with Bobby Jindal, who got down into the mud to tangle with Trump over his stature – and Trump ended up loving it, especially the part where they traded snarky barbs on social media.
“When they attack a woman candidate, they don’t want to look like they are beating up on a girl”, Jeffe said. Sure, we know what he thinks of women – his occasional, pre-Millennial sexism is a hallmark of his quasi-boorish persona – but this is a higher-level competition and she’s a high-level competitor.
