A Star is Born this way?

In the original 1937 movie A Star Is Born, Fredric March played a troubled movie star and Janet Gaynor played an aspiring young actress he helps find fame.

Lady Gag is now in negotiations to play the lead role in Bradley Cooper‘s remake of A Star is Born, according to a report in Variety. It was on and off for years (Clint Eastwood almost directed at one point, Leonardo DiCaprio considered the male lead), and now it looks like the project has some heat on it again, now with Cooper starring and directing opposite Gaga. In 1954, Judy Garland and James Mason took over the leads; in 1976, Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson made a version set in the music business. At one time, Beyonce was attached to star, but things stalled when she got pregnant and Eastwood moved on to Jersey Boys.

Reports surfaced last month that Cooper was courting Gaga to be part of the project. When Eastwood took on other projects and Beyoncé dropped out, he handed the reins to Cooper, another rumored male star; Beyoncé tiptoed around the movie again before Cooper confirmed she wasn’t involved late previous year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gaga tested for Warner Bros. bosses and her audition impressed executives, giving her the edge over other potentials stars.

The singer, who recently won a Golden Globe for her work on American Horror Story: Hotel, is said to be nearing a deal to take on the lead role initially offered to Beyoncé in a remake of A Star is Born.
