The news comes as a surprise given how good he has been over the past couple of seasons but Lahm retired early from global duty over the summer of 2014 after Germany won the World Cup.

Lahm will be 34 by the time his deal expires and said on Wednesday that his intentions remain the same.

Lahm, who has made 436 appearances for Bayern to date, also confirmed that he plans to stay at the club “in some capacity” after hanging up his boots.

“I’ll then be 34”.

Lahm will go down as one of the best to ever play the game in a German shirt and his talents will be missed once he retires in 2018. “Everybody who writes him off is making a big mistake”, he told Sport Bild.

“We are there for him as a team to support him and to build him up again after all his misfortune”.

“With the national team I prepared myself for my farewell, that is why I am still 100 per cent behind the decision and have never regretted it”. It’s not that he hangs his head.
