Lake Tahoe weather: Foot of snow possible by Thanksgiving morning

Let’s get right to the point: a fairly significant winter storm will wreak havoc on your holiday travel plans this week.

However, if the storm pushes southward instead, excessive rain could drench Southern California, providing some much needed rainfall to the drought-stricken area.

A white Thanksgiving appears to be in store for the greater Tahoe-Truckee region, according to the National Weather Service.

Snowfall amounts are expected to be lower to the south and west of Spokane and higher in North Idaho. The major cities most likely to be hit by the forthcoming storm, which could hit the western USA from Monday through Wednesday, include Seattle, San Francisco, Salt Lake City and Denver. Overnight lows will be in the single digits Thursday & Friday mornings.

We think the storm will start developing around 6 p.m. on Tuesday with snow throughout most of the night Tuesday into Wednesday morning and then start to wind down by Thanksgiving Day. Severe weather will be limited to elevated storms with hail as the shallow cold air mass undercuts the warmer air in Texas and Oklahoma. Southwest winds 5 to 15 miles per hour.

A storm system off the OR coast will come on shore Tuesday and move east into northern Nevada Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The cold weather continues through Thanksgiving and into the weekend with lows mainly in the teens and highs in the upper 20s to lower 30s. That sunshine is forecast to stick around through Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
