Local police chief John Omusanga, in Kenya’s western Homa Bay district, said two children drowned and one adult was missing. They were traveling with their mother to the Kenyan port city of Kisumu.

The fishing boat had four people and have all been accounted for.

The accident happened at about 02:00 on Wednesday morning (Tuesday 23:00 GMT).

Though the exact cause of the accident remains unknown, it is believed that the passenger boat came into contact with a stationary fishing boat which caused it to go under.

Earlier reports stated there were around 200 people on the boat that capsized. The wreckages of both boats have also been recovered from the lake. In 1996 the ferry MV Bukoba capsized on the lake, killing an estimated 800 people.
