It seemed as if Jackson would be a runaway Heisman victor, but the 15th-ranked Cardinals lost their final two games of the season. His play gets scrutinized and picked apart more, because numerous folks who gushed about Deshaun Watson’s game a season ago now focus on the overthrows and critical interceptions.
The other finalists for the Walter Camp award, which is voted by the sports information directors and head coaches from the 129 FBS schools, were Washington quarterback Jake Browning and Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen. Here’s his competition in that respect.
The Davey O’Brien Award victor has gone on to win the Heisman in eight of the last 10 years. Wishnowsky led the nation in net punting (44.9 yards) and had 28 punts of at least 50 yards. They look good but theyre pretty cheap.. The Sooners wide receiver almost doubled his catches (74) and receiving yards (1,465) this year, compared to last season (46 catches, 743 receiving yards).
Ward was ahead of his time in many ways. The UofL sophomore has the college football world focusing on him and Louisville football like never before in the history of the program. However, in college football, he was sensational. Watson had five or more touchdowns for the third time this year in the ACC Championship game, accounting for 43 touchdowns on the year.
As only a sophomore, Jackson is about to break every major rushing record ever established at the University of Louisville. But since it doesn’t, that discussion is on hold until next season.
In addition, Colorado’s Mike MacIntyre was recognized as the previously announced victor of The Home Depot Coach of the Year Award, Pittsburgh running back James Connor earned with the Disney Spirit Award as most inspirational player for overcoming cancer, and retired coach Steve Spurrier received the Contributions to College Football Award. Ohio State had many weapons, but the heart and soul of the team was its quarterback.
Mayfield, 21, led the country in completion percentage (71.2 percent) and quarterback efficiency after passing for 3,669 yards and totaling 44 touchdowns (38 passing, six rushing) for the seventh-ranked Sooners (10-2).
“Typical Baker”, Oklahoma running back Samaje Perine said. That’s a difference of 1,662 points or almost double McFadden’s total.

While all of the players listed are worthy candidates, ultimately this award is a no-brainer. Even Vick has given Jackson his due credit, tweeting earlier this year, “Jackson [is] 5x better than I was at Virginia Tech”. The award has been presented each year since 1955 to the National Player of the Year through the conference championship weekend.
