Eovaldi (4-2) gave up one run and struck out five with no walks.

“It’s just trying to do too much-you get two quick outs and you try to change it from what you already did, as opposed to what’s working”, said Nathan Eovaldi, whose batting average against grows to.291 with two outs. The travel day allows Arizona a chance to skip banged-up starter Rubby De La Rosa in the rotation and give the grinders who are going every day a chance to catch a collective breath. He added that he was not particularly anxious because “I’ve been feeling good ever since the day after (he got hurt)”.

The Yankees (17-22) now head to Oakland for four games against the red-hot Athletics (19-22), who have won four in a row and five out of six after going through a stretch during which they lost nine of 10.

“I’m playing back, good runner, early in the game, we’re up two”, Headley said.

“I threw him a fastball away, the ball was away and he hit a ball through the six hole”, Miller said plainly.

The first run that Ellsbury scored came courtesy of Gardner, who launched his fifth home run of the season in his first at-bat, planting the ball 416 feet into right field.

Eovaldi was very good for the Yankees on Wednesday night, as he went six innings, allowed one run on one hit, walked none and struck out five. Chris Owings led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run off Miller.

Yankees: Alex Rodriguez (strained right hamstring) is eligible to come off the DL on Thursday but manager Joe Girardi says it will be a few days more before that happens.

Coming off Monday’s 12-2 defeat by the D-backs and Tuesday’s 5-3 loss, in which the Yankees displayed some shoddy defense, Girardi took the target off his team. Teixeira doubled, took third on Carlos Beltran’s single and scored on Chase Headley’s single. The Yankees right-hander set down 18 straight D-backs after Jean Segura’s leadoff double in the first that ricocheted off second base. I know you miss him a lot”, he said, “but please don’t be sad tonight.

Yankees: RHP Michael Pineda (1-4, 6.28 ERA), pitching with an extra day’s rest, makes his first start against the Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks are 1-6 in their last 7 during game 3 of a series and 2-5 in Millers last 7 starts.

1B Mark Teixeira is three home runs shy of 400 in his career, but he has just three home runs in 128 at at-bats and none in his last 30 games after going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts Wednesday.
