Land-blubber seal’s road trip has drivers in California screaming
On Monday, officials in northern California reported there were traffic jams one mile in each direction after the large, tenacious elephant seal tried to cross the Highway 37 in Sonoma County.

The crisis began to unfold at 1 p.m. Monday when the California Highway Patrol got calls about the seal blocking the road, and they couldn’t figure out why the animal got there.
The California Highway Patrol arrived with a US Fish and Wildlife Service Crew and they managed to usher the huge animal back into the water. “Every time we get him in the water he waits until we walk away and he’s right back up on land”.
Crews with the Marine Mammal Centre and the San Pablo Bay National Marine Sanctuary also helped with the rescue.
Marine Mammal Center spokeswoman Laura Sherr says the seal doesn’t seem hurt. Marine mammal experts say she may be trying to get to the dry field on the other side because she is about to give birth.
Rulli said a lot of female elephant seals flock to San Simeon in December and January to give birth.
Wildlife officials monitored her overnight while she slept, and as of this morning she was back in the water, swimming around. It’s unknown if the seal in Sonoma County is pregnant, he said.
As the sun rose on this attractive day and Bay Area commuters began getting back to work, so too did everyone’s favorite “very determined” elephant seal.
KTVU spoke with a veterinarian who said it was an unusual area for an elephant seal to come out of the water and that it’s likely headed north toward Point Reyes, but may have taken a wrong turn.

“I think she’s just gotten a little bit disoriented”, Halaska said.
