Landeskog, Duchene lead Avalanche to 5-3 win over Jets

Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and two assists in a win over the Jets on Saturday. “That’s the biggest thing and it was a big win for us”.

“I’m playing with two fantastic hockey players in Gabe and Nate (MacKinnon)”, Duchene said.

Roy said, “It was a tough year and it would have been easy for coach (Jacques) Demers to put the other guy in, and he stayed by me, by my side …” The Avs scored three unanswered goals to start the game, creating a major advantage 25:55 in.

Netminder Michael Hutchinson struggled behind his team’s inconsistent defensive play and the Jets fell behind 3-0 in a hurry.

However, at 2:48 of the third period the Avs got a goal from Chris Wagner and while Jacob Trouba scored a sensational goal off a spin-o-rama move coming off the left wing, the Jets would never tie the score. When we talked to him, (general manager) Joe (Sakic) and I, we mentioned that we want him to be more intense out there and compete more, winning battles.

“You just feel that it always has to be the hard way for us but you know what?”

This comes in the wake of Roy, in response to a question after a 5-3 loss to Ottawa Wednesday night, acknowledging that Varlamov allowed a soft and deflating first goal. “It’s huge for me to get the confidence from him”.

Winnipeg, which lost at home to Colorado 4-1 on Monday, was playing its third game in four days.

Winnipeg found their legs in the middle frame. “It’s still not a lopsided period but we gave up a couple of good chances and they scored on them”.

Ladd cut the lead to 3-1 when Trouba’s shot deflected off a Colorado stick and then hit off Ladd’s body and past Varlamov at 9:05 of the second. “We need points.” The Avalanche face the Jets for the second time this week, wrapping up their 17-day road trip with a 4-1 triumph Monday in Winnipeg.

The Jets got within one when Wheeler scored a short-handed goal at 13:37.

Dennis Everberg cleared waivers and was assigned to the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage, leaving the Avalanche with 11 forwards, so one will be recalled before Saturday. Less than two minutes later, the Avs looked to reestablish their three-goal lead on their first power play, but a offensive passing sequence on the half wall between defenseman Nick Holden and forward Mikhail Grigorenko went bad and the turnover led to Blake Wheeler’s shorthanded goal off a 2-on-2 rush. Winnipeg G Ondrej Pavelec missed his fourth game with a lower-body injury.
