Landon Donovan appears set to rejoin LA Galaxy

Midfielder Nigel De Jong left recently to join a team in the Turkish league, and forward Gyasi Zardes underwent surgery last week to fix a broken bone in his right foot. The Galaxy are next in action Sunday night against Orlando City SC at 6pm CT on FS1. Being on the field again, being able to help an organization that has meant so much to me and having my son in my arms after a game will undoubtedly make me and all my loved ones happy. He wrote: “Since my retirement, I have remained in close contact with numerous staff and players on the Galaxy”.

“Over the ensuing days, I began to think about their inquiries and it struck me that perhaps this is something I should consider”.

Donovan, who won his record sixth MLS Cup in his final match with the Galaxy, will be a boost to the club’s attack during the final stretch of the regular season. “I will do everything in my power to make that happen, and I hope we are all there celebrating together!”

Sources confirmed the deal to ESPN FC earlier on Thursday, though there remains some confusion over what roster mechanism will be used to add Donovan to the Galaxy’s roster.

Donovan, 34, cited burnout when he retired from soccer six months after being cut from the USA national team by Coach Juergen Klinsmann ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Donovan’s 57 global goals are the most of any United States player and his 157 appearances for the national team between 2000 and 2014 ranks only behind Cobi Jones. Six months earlier, Donovan was cut from the USA men’s national team by coach Jurgen Klinsmann ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Donovan’s decision to return almost two years after announcing his retirement is rare but not unheard of in major professional sports.

Landon explains the scenario of seeing three Galaxy players get hurt in one game and then losing Nigel de Jong to Turkey. He has more goals (57) and assists (58) than any player in USA national team history.
