Landslide buries 34 builders in southeast China; 7 rescued

Seven construction workers, who were buried in landslide in southeast China, have been pulled out alive so far, according to reports.

As many as 35 people are missing following a landslide in southeastern China, state media reported.

The landslide, which buried the builders’ temporary shed in a construction site of a hydropower station and damaged its offices, was triggered by heavy downpours that unleashed 191.6 millimeters of rain in 24 hours starting on Saturday. Almost 20 cm (8 inches) of rain fell in the mountainous region in less than 24 hours, according to the report. The mountainous country boasts rich scenic lakes and canyons.

Heavy rain has affected much of southern China since Wednesday, triggering floods and landslides.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered the Fujian local government and related departments to make efforts to rescue the people buried under the debris. Several excavators will also be used in the rescue.
