LAPD Officer Involved in Shooting at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance

Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Jane Kim said the department was investigating the officer-involved shooting at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, but had no further information.

A police officer killed a man during a struggle inside a hospital emergency room at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Saturday, December 19.

After the scuffle, officers and the suspect were transported to the hospital, located at 1000 W. Carson Street, to get treatment for minor injuries from the fight.

But when officers went to remove his handcuffs from the gurney, the suspect ‘suddenly goes on the attack, ‘ according to LAPD Lt. John Jenal.

Police said he was throwing bottles at an apartment building.

Tingirides said witnesses reported the man as being calm and cooperative until the hospital was ready to release him, at which point he allegedly attacked officers and picked up a metal stool.

There had been a struggle during the arrest and the 26-year-old had attacked police, injuring two officers, he said.

Two different officers were taking off the man’s handcuffs when the altercation occurred, reports NBC. Officers used a stun gun to try to subdue him but it didn’t work. Officers fired one round at the suspect and he later died in the hospital, according to police.
