Larry Brown and SMU are sanctioned by NCAA

However, multiple NCAA rules violations have stripped them of their AAC Championship victory and will prevent the team from competing in the NCAA tournament and the AAC tournament this season.

The probe also found that the head basketball coach, Larry Brown, “failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance within his program” and lied to enforcement staff about the violations. Noting NCAA rules dictate a coach is responsible for the program, Brown said he accepted that responsibility, but did “not accept the appropriateness of the punishment”.

That led to a postseason ban for the SMU golf team, a significant blow because it means the team’s star player, Bryson DeChambeau, won’t be allowed to defend the NCAA title he won past year.

ESPN previously reported that Ulric Maligi, a former basketball assistant, provided impermissible coursework help to Keith Frazier, now in his junior season.

Brown vehemently denied lying to NCAA investigators, a violation also included in the investigator’s report.

Brown was hit with the famed lack of control charge and will also have to attend a rules seminar for the next two years.

He is one reason SMU officials said they are considering appealing the NCAA ruling.

SMU President R. Gerald Turner and Director of Athletics Rick Hart were scheduled to address the media at 3 p.m. ET and Brown was set to speak at 4:30 p.m., according to the school’s website.

Frazier subsequently missed the second half of last season due to academic ineligibility after averaging 10.5 points in 17 games. Brown is bad news for the college game, and it’s time for him to go.

In its 60-page report, the NCAA repeatedly suggested Brown deliberately ignored warning signs and did nothing when he had the chance, choosing instead to make “choices against his better judgment when it came to compliance issues” at SMU.

The penalties were revealed Tuesday, more than eight months after the school acknowledged an NCAA investigation.

“(Brown) hired the assistant coach, the administrative assistant and recruited the student-athlete involved”, Adams said. SMU appealed the ruling, but was shot down by the NCAA. The previous two: Kansas and UCLA.

Now, the NCAA didn’t find Brown had any direct knowledge of the academic misconduct but that doesn’t matter.
