Lassa fever: Death toll rises as FG pledges to contain disease

According to him, the disease has also been confined to the ten states where the spread was reported last week but with a new record of 25 cases confirmed by the ministry.

Confirming the case, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Heregie Aihanuwa, said five persons were initially hospitalized at the hospital over Lassa Fever, adding that three of the patients were treated and discharged.

He did not disclose the state from which the additional life was lost.

“The committee will embark on a fact finding mission, assess the current situation, document response experiences, identify gaps and proffer recommendations on how to prevent future occurrences”, Mr. Adewole, a professor, said.

The Senate President tasked the Senate Committee on Health to follow up on the contents of the Senate Resolution by doing their due diligence on their oversight functions with the Federal Ministry of Health, and the Federal Minister of Health.

Dr. Azinge specifically warned those eating rats as bush meat to desist from the practice, urging all residents to keep their surroundings clean; avoid exposing food items; plug all holes leading to the house; set traps for rats; and avoid contacts with infected persons.

He said: “Avoid drying food in the open and along roadsides”.

“The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) should coordinate all responses to ensure compliance”, Saraki said, “Every Nigerian should also continue our collective social health education, and communication activities to prevent the disease from spreading further”.

The minister said affected states were advised to intensify awareness about the signs and symptoms of the disease.

The states affected are: Bauchi, Taraba, Niger, Kano, Rivers, Edo, Nassarawa, Plateau, Oyo, Gombe and Ondo states.
