Soon after, officials said, the wireless set in the CRPF control room crackled informing it about militants hurling grenades and firing on security forces at four places in downtown Srinagar like Nowhatta Chowk, Gojwara Chowk, Bata Gali and Khaniyar Chowk, as they sought reinforcements.

Two of the three terrorists who launched the attack were gunned down by the CRPF soldiers.

He was Commanding Officer of the 49 battalion of CRPF. CRPF chief K Durga Prasad was quoted as saying, “Pramod Kumar was given DG’s commendation disc in 2015 and commendation certificate in 2014 for “highest operational acumen”.

“I offer my heartfelt condolences to Promod Kumar’s bereaved family”.

Nine paramilitary troopers were also injured in the attack.

The army said five infiltrators were killed in the encounter. “He succumbed to his injuries shortly after”.

The main Independence Day function was held at the Bakshi stadium here. The authorities have snapped Internet connections and barred mobile telephony except for the post-paid services of the State-owned BSNL.

The prime minister met national party leaders on Friday to seek ways to end the worst unrest in Kashmir since 2010, but there was no agreement to send an all-party delegation to the region for talks to try and calm tensions there.

The attack was carried out amid a complete curfew and tight security arrangements across the Valley, which has been witnessing large-scale protests for over a month now.

Kashmir inspector general of police SJM Gilani said the militants “looked like non-locals”. At Trehgam, Kupwara miscreants pelted stones on police and security force deployment, police said.
