Randal Grichuck hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the ninth to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night at St. Louis.

The Cubs backed up Arrieta with 10 hits and their second six-run inning in as many games, erasing a 1-0 deficit as 11 men batted and battered Carlos Martinez.

After sending Chris Sale to his first loss after a 9-0 start, the Indians got three runs and five hits in six innings against Joel Quintana (5-4).

Jake Arrieta had yet another excellent start last Friday when he defeated the San Francisco Giants on the road.

“We just can’t keep putting up six-run innings and expect to stay in the game”, Matheny said.

Adam Wainwright had his best outing of the season last Wednesday against Colorado (6.2 IP, 0 ER), earning the win, and improving to 4-0 in his last five starts (0-3 in first four starts of the season).

Dodgers 3, Reds 1: Joc Pederson hit a go-ahead, two-run single and Scott Kazmir struck out 12 to complete a three-game sweep.

It has taken the best run support in the majors (7.2 runs a game) to help him through the first 10 starts. Wacha is 3-3 with a 4.86 ERA in nine games (eight starts) against the Cubs and has avoided them so far this season.

“We realize it’s impossible for Jake to go out there and throw up zeros every time”, Bryant said. It was the first home run allowed by Oh in 24 2/3 innings. “He found a real good spot and we know what it looks like when he can get into a good rhythm”.

Cubs walk watch: six in this one bring the season total to 215, or 4.89 per game. Stephen Piscotty opened the inning with a walk and then scored from first on Adams’ double into the right-field corner.

“Mike gave me the green light and I was ready for it”, Wong said of Arrieta’s fastball over the heart of the plate. John Lackey made a mistake to Matt Adams who hit a pinch-hit two-run home run to tie the game, and Adam Warren surrendering the game winnings blast to Randall Grichuk.

Corey Kluber allowed two runs over 7 1/3 innings and Cleveland roughed up a top White Sox pitcher for the second straight day.

Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter, hitless in 16 at-bats against Arrieta, was out of the lineup Wednesday because he was with his wife, who went into labor before the game with their first child. But the Cubs still aren’t slumping at very disappointing rates, only 4-7 in their last eleven and still beating division-rival Pittsburgh in another series at Wrigley last week. Offensively, they average 0.0 runs per game, which is good for second in the NL. Yadier Molina was still at first after a leadoff single when, with two outs, Adams planted a 407-foot drive off a curveball into the center-field greenery.

Three batters into the game, Chicago owned a lead it would never relinquish on Kris Bryant’s RBI single.

Yangervis Solarte hit a tying, two-run homer off Josh Osich in the eighth. Jorge Soler connects for a two-run homer.

AL-East leading Boston got its fourth straight win – 10-3 against the Rockies – with Jackie Bradley Jr. extending his major league-best hitting streak to 29 games. But, the Cubs stung rookie reliever Dean Kiekhefer and would allow another four runs to give the Cubs a 12-3 win to tie the series.
