Late throwing error lifts Cardinals to 6-5 win over Brewers

Villar added an RBI double and Gennett gave the Brewers the lead with a run-scoring infield single. The big out was to get the out at third.

Davies struck out Grichuk looking on a 2-2 fastball at the knees, but Kolten Wong made the Brewers pay for their defensive mistake with a sacrifice fly to left that put the Cards on top, 1-0.

Martinez struck out eight of the first 11 batters he faced, and while he issued two walks in the second inning, Milwaukee didn’t get a hit until Ryan Braun led off the fourth with a single.

Now, Morelli’s suit claims the Brewers, as well as their insurer, did not adhere to Wisconsin’s “safe place statute”, as they did not take steps “reasonably necessary to protect the life, health, safety, and welfare” of visitors to the park. A botched rundown led to St. Louis’ first run and the winning run scored on what should have been an inning-changing double play.

“You have to do a lot of things right against these teams”, Counsell said. “We just didn’t do quite enough right”.

Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez also set a career high for strikeouts, finishing with 13, and held Milwaukee to a run on four hits with a pair of walks over six innings of work.

The Cardinals recalled LHP Dean Kiekhefer from Triple-A Memphis to fill the roster spot of RHP Mike Leake, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list. The move was retroactive to Aug 22. He is eligible to return September 6. Wainwright is 13-8 with a 2.23 ERA and 171 strikeouts in his career against the Brewers. Wily Peralta takes the hill, and he’s 5-9 with a 5.87 ERA and 59 strikeouts this season. Peralta is 1-2 with a 3.52 ERA in four starts since being recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on August 8.
