Latest missed cut adds to Woods’ season of struggles

Woods, who won the last of his 14 majors at the 2008 U.S. Open, has missed the cut in his last two majors.

The leader board was as clouded as the sky over Whistling Straits. Further birdies followed at the 18th and third holes before the 35-year-old’s charge was halted by the bad weather with six holes still to play.

Jones and fellow Aussie Jason Day were tied at nine under when a fierce thunderstorm packing high winds forced the suspension of play on Friday with 57 players still on the course.

“There’s still enough good stuff to give me encouragement and make me feel that I can shoot a low one tomorrow and get myself back into it”, he said. “I said, ‘The end is in sight.’ And 30 seconds later, they blew the horn”.

“The experiences that I’ve had in the past in previous finishes, I think it’s setting me up for something big in the future”. He’s been one of the top rookies on tour this season, but is still searching for a breakout win.

Lingmerth started the day in second place, a stroke behind first-round leader Dustin Johnson. He still had hope at the PGA Championship, though he was 4 over with five holes to play, two shots from the projected cut.

His compatriot Jones also ended on nine-under-par, with the storm drawing his round to a close on the 12th hole, but one man who was left unaffected by the conditions was Japan’s Hiroshi Iwata who set a course record after a stunning round. The 35-year-old had an eagle and eight birdies against a lone bogey in his 9-under round. Woods stands four over par with five holes to complete.

Day shared the 54-hole lead at the U.S. Open while coping with vertigo symptoms.

Through two days and almost two rounds, the 97th PGA Championship has delivered a smorgasbord of storylines.

Shot of the day: Jordan Spieth holed out from a bunker at No. 18 for birdie to keep his momentum going. It looked like he might recover on Friday after birdies on the first three holes.

“We were thinking about playing 10 feet out to the right, given my backswing”, he said.

“I’ve been nice and aggressive, making full and committed swings at it. That was probably one of the most surprising things about yesterday is how quickly I got back into the mindset of tournament golf and being aggressive”.

“That was a roller coaster”, Lingmerth said on TNT. “But I’m real happy to be done”. “I’m just struggling a little bit today”.

Jordan Spieth, looking to carve out another slice of golf history at this week’s PGA Championship, delivered another special performance to move into contention before the second round was suspended late on Friday.
