The American star, who is also chasing a record seventh crown in NY, has been struggling with a right shoulder injury which contributed to an early loss at the Olympics and forced a withdrawal from last week’s Cincinnati tournament.

New York Post mentioned that there is a high probability that the top-seeded American Serena Williams will face the two-time major US Open semi-finalist Ekaterina Makarova or Germany’s Angelique Kerber who is the closest candidate for the spot.

“Even when my ball toss is going haywire I’m not panicking about it, I’m just taking it a point at a time and it seems to be working”.

“I have never had this type of injury before and I haven’t got much time so I tried to compensate and improvise as much as I could to get ready for the US Open”.

Rafael Nadal clinched the doubles gold with partner Marc Lopez and the world number one Novak Djokovic was knocked out in the first round of the singles event.

The only worry for Murray is his relatively mediocre recent record in NY – runs to the quarter-finals in 2013 and 2014 were followed by a fourth-round exit to Kevin Anderson 12 months ago.

Second seed and Olympic champion Andy Murray, the 2012 victor, starts against Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic.

She was denied a first calendar Grand Slam in 2015 when she lost to by Roberta Vinci in last September’s semifinals.

That’s a feat so rare that only two men have ever achieved it with Rod Laver the most recent in 1969.

Williams is a strong favorite to win the year’s final major of the year for a seventh time.

It was a win which came after a dispiriting run at the Slams – a shock semi-final defeat to Roberta Vinci in NY 12 months ago followed by losses in the Australian and French Open finals to Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza respectively.

On Friday night the world No 1 detailed his physical struggles, a wrist injury, in the lead up to his upcoming US Open defence.

With Roger Federer missing the tournament due to a knee injury which has shut down his season, fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka takes the third seeding.

Also, American Sloane Stephens withdrew due to an injury to her right foot.

The second-ranked Scot, who has lost just twice since early May, is favoured by some to dethrone an ailing Novak Djokovic next week and win a second U.S. Open title, though the Serbian top seed remains the favourite with bookmakers.
