Laurel woman dies from West Nile Virus
Dr. Tulika Singh, chief of medicine and medical director of infectious diseases and infection control for the Grand Haven-based health system, said she ordered a blood test to check for West Nile virus because the patient had spent time outdoors hiking. “While the virus can occur symptom-free in people and resolve itself naturally in a few weeks, it can cause sickness or death, typically in older people”.

Vaccinate your horses for WNV as it is a very effective prevention tool.
Take precautions to develop methods to repel mosquitoes from biting your horse.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture will be testing mosquitoes and conducting samples near the victim’s home. It is bordered on the north by Fetzer Lane and Monet Drive; on the east by Picasso Drive; on the south by West Cypress Road; and on the west by Jordan Lane, 4th Street, and Orchard Park Drive.
Last week, state officials confirmed West Nile virus cases were found in Macomb, Monroe and Ottawa counties, and in two blood donors found in Oakland and Wayne counties. An insecticide will be dispersed from a truck-mounted sprayer.
WNV is most commonly transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. Three animals as well as three people were EEE-positive. People can develop West Nile virus infections through a mosquito bite. The number of California counties with West Nile virus activity is higher than last year and above the five-year average, according to the state Department of Public Health.

So far this season, 29 people have been infected with the virus in Maryland, according to WBAL, which said that insects have tested positive for West Nile in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Residents should also clear their property of even small pools of standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
